The Star-Shaped Patch

Ani tore her favorite coat on a rough fence. The hole looked enormous to her.
“I cannot wear it to the picnic,” she said.
Dad brought a sewing box. “We can mend it.”
Ani chose a yellow scrap shaped like a star. Dad stitched while she held the coat steady, safely away from the needle.
At the picnic, a raindrop landed on the star. Then another. Ani spread her coat over the basket while everyone moved under the shelter. The sandwiches stayed dry.
“Your star saved lunch,” her cousin said.
Ani looked at the neat stitches. The coat was not exactly as it had been before. Now it had a star and a story.
On the way home, she noticed a loose button on Dad’s jacket. “Shall we mend that together, too?” she asked.
