When someone becomes distant or communicates less, we may immediately assume that we no longer matter. But sometimes distance comes from exhaustion, grief, work, or an internal struggle they are not yet able to explain. Do not guess where you can ask respectfully. Say, “You seem distant lately. Is everything okay, and how should I understand this?” At the same time, do not use empathy to excuse endless neglect. Compassion and boundaries can exist together. Leave room for an honest explanation, but also pay attention to the pattern of behavior over time.
