After the rain, a puddle filled the garden path. Ant stood on one side. Her seed sack was on the other.

“I cannot swim across,” she told Beetle.

Beetle found a button beneath the bench. They placed it on the puddle, but it tipped when Ant stepped aboard.

“We need something wider,” said Ant.

A dry leaf made a good boat. The button became a seat. Beetle laid a long twig across the narrowest part of the puddle, and Ant pulled herself along it.

On the far side, she collected her seeds. Then she brought one back for Beetle.

“Will you keep the boat?” he asked.

“Let us leave it here,” said Ant. “Someone else may need to cross.”

They tied it to a grass stem. By lunchtime, a tiny cricket was waiting for a turn.
