Foreman Ruben always kept one spare work uniform hanging near the factory entrance. It was deliberately one size larger than the standard uniform, although no one on the floor knew why.

New employees assumed it was simply an unclaimed item that someone had forgotten.

The employee who needed it

One day, a new employee arrived for her first shift visibly pregnant. She did not want special treatment or to request an exception to the workplace dress code.

Ruben asked no questions. He simply pointed to the uniform hanging near the entrance.

“That one is always there for anyone who needs a little more room,” he said, and never mentioned it again.

Why Ruben kept it there

Years earlier, Ruben’s mother had worked at a factory during a difficult pregnancy. When the standard uniform no longer fit her properly, management sent her home. She lost a week’s wages that her family could not afford to lose.

When Ruben became a foreman, he decided that no one working under his supervision would ever be sent home for the same reason. He made no announcement and wrote no new policy. He simply placed a larger uniform on a hook near the entrance.

Ruben never expected to be thanked. Most of the employees who used the uniform never even knew the story behind it.

Sometimes the best way to correct an old injustice is to create a solution so quietly that no one has to relive its painful cause out loud.
